Scratched Paintball Mask Lens: Polish or Replace?
Scratched Paintball Mask Lens: Polish or Replace?
Replace a scratched paintball mask lens as soon as your fingernail catches in the scratch or it causes glare against the light. Only fine surface scratches on the outside can be polished, and only gently. Everything else needs a new lens.
When is polishing enough for a paintball mask?
Polishing only works on shallow micro-scratches on the outer surface, where your fingernail doesn't catch. Clean the lens first with lukewarm water, a drop of dish soap and a microfiber cloth. Grit and dried paint act like sandpaper. Then apply a thin layer of plastic polish such as Novus 2 with a soft cloth. Light strokes, no pressure. 🌑
When should you replace the lens? 🔥
Swap it right away if you see any of these:
- a scratch you can feel with your fingernail
- hairline cracks, chips or dents after a hit
- scratches on the inside, where the anti-fog coating sits
- glare or double vision in sun or floodlights
The lens protects your eyes. A deep scratch weakens the plastic exactly where the next ball will land. 💥
What should you never do? 🚫
- Use acetone, isopropyl alcohol or glass cleaner: they make the plastic brittle.
- Wipe or polish the inside: you destroy the anti-fog coating.
- Use toothpaste or abrasive paste: it adds more scratches than it removes.
- Wipe a dirty lens dry: rinse first, then dry.
Which standards apply internationally? ⚖️
Paintball masks sold in the EU fall under PPE Regulation (EU) 2016/425 and carry a CE mark. Many models are also tested to ASTM F1776, the US standard for paintball eye protection. That test covers the lens in its original condition. A heavily polished or damaged lens no longer meets it reliably. Most fields require undamaged eye protection, and rules differ by country and operator. When in doubt, replace the lens and follow the manufacturer's instructions. This is not legal advice. 🌟
Quick summary 🌙
- Fingernail doesn't catch: clean it, gently polish the outside if needed.
- Fingernail catches or crack visible: replace the lens.
- Scratch on the inside: replace the lens.
- Not sure: replace it. A new lens costs less than an ER visit. 🔥
